eth_maxPriorityFeePerGas

eth_maxPriorityFeePerGas returns the node's suggested priority fee — the miner/sequencer tip — per unit of gas for EIP-1559 transactions, expressed in wei (ETH is the gas token on Base). The value is a heuristic the node derives from recent block history and is meant to be used as the maxPriorityFeePerGas field when assembling a type-2 transaction. Base is an OP Stack rollup with roughly 2-second blocks, so its tips are usually small, but they still climb during bursts of consumer-app and DEX activity. Call it against https://base.therpc.io/YOUR_API_KEY (Base mainnet, chain ID 8453 / 0x2105) with no parameters.

Use cases

• Populate the maxPriorityFeePerGas field when building an EIP-1559 transaction to send on Base, pairing it with a base-fee figure from eth_getBlockByNumber or eth_feeHistory.
• Seed a wallet or dapp fee-suggestion UI with a sensible default tip so users on Base get a ready-to-sign transaction without manually guessing a tip in ETH.

Errors & troubleshooting

Common pitfalls

• The value is a heuristic, not a consensus number: two nodes can return different suggestions for the same Base block, so treat it as guidance rather than an exact required tip.
• This method assumes EIP-1559; on chains that lack it the call fails or returns a meaningless value. Base does support EIP-1559, but if you target a legacy non-1559 network fall back to eth_gasPrice instead.
• For precise fee strategies — for example targeting a specific inclusion percentile during Base congestion — prefer eth_feeHistory with explicit reward percentiles over this single heuristic value.
