eth_getProof

eth_getProof (EIP-1186) returns an account's core fields — balance in MATIC wei, nonce, codeHash, and storageHash — together with the Merkle-Patricia trie proofs that tie those fields, and any requested storage slots, back to the state root of a chosen Polygon PoS block (chain ID 137). Because Polygon is EVM-equivalent and checkpoints its Bor state to Ethereum L1 through Heimdall, these proofs let a verifier confirm account or storage state without trusting the responding node. Call https://polygon.therpc.io/YOUR_API_KEY with an address, a list of storage keys, and a block tag, and the response carries the account proof plus a proof for each storage slot you asked for.

Use cases

• Verify a Polygon account's balance or a storage slot trustlessly inside a light client or a cross-chain bridge contract that already knows the block's state root.
• Build fraud proofs or validity proofs for dispute-resolution flows that reference Polygon state.
• Supply state witness data for stateless-client experiments running against Polygon.
• Audit a token's supply or a specific holder balance by proving the relevant storage slot value against a known Polygon block hash.

Errors & troubleshooting

Common pitfalls

• Actually using the proof means implementing Merkle-Patricia trie traversal and keccak verification — if you only need the value and not trustless verification, eth_getStorageAt or eth_getBalance is far simpler.
• The request must hit a node that still retains state for the chosen Polygon block; old blocks need an archive node, or you get a missing-trie-node error.
• A proof is only meaningful once you recompute its root and check it equals the stateRoot from that block's header — skipping that step defeats the purpose of the proof.
