eth_getStorageAt

eth_getStorageAt reads the raw value held at a single storage slot of a contract on Arbitrum One, the Optimistic Rollup (chain ID 42161) that runs the standard EVM under Nitro/ArbOS and pays gas in ETH. It bypasses the ABI entirely, reaching straight into the contract's storage trie. Call it at https://arbitrum.therpc.io/YOUR_API_KEY with a contract address, a slot index, and a block tag, and it returns the 32-byte value stored at that specific storage slot, left-padded with zeros and hex-encoded.

Use cases

• Read a proxy's implementation address from the EIP-1967 slot on Arbitrum One without needing the contract's ABI.
• Inspect on-chain governance state — proposal status, vote tallies — directly from a DAO contract's slots.
• Verify the storage layout of a deployed Arbitrum contract during a security audit.

Errors & troubleshooting

Common pitfalls

• Solidity storage layout is not exposed in the ABI — you must know or derive the slot index for each state variable before you can read it.
• Multiple small variables can be packed into one 32-byte slot, so a single read may carry several values; isolate each with bit-masking and shifts.
• A mapping entry does not live at its declared base slot; its value sits at keccak256(abi.encode(key, baseSlot)), which you must compute first.
