eth_getStorageAt

eth_getStorageAt reads the raw 32-byte value stored at a specific slot of a contract on the Avalanche C-Chain, bypassing the ABI entirely. The C-Chain runs the EVM and pays gas in AVAX, so any contract — a Trader Joe pair, an Aave market, a proxy — keeps its state in numbered storage slots that you can inspect directly with this call. It is read-only and consumes no gas. Send the request to https://avalanche.therpc.io/YOUR_API_KEY (chain ID 43114, 0xa86a) with the contract address, a slot index, and a block tag; the node returns the slot's 32-byte value, left-padded with zeros.

Use cases

• Read a proxy's implementation address straight from the EIP-1967 slot when the C-Chain contract exposes no getter for it.
• Inspect DAO governance state — proposal status, vote tallies — directly from storage when the view functions are missing or gated.
• Verify a deployed contract's storage layout against its source during a security audit on Snowtrace-verified code.
• Debug unexpected contract behavior by reading the raw slots backing a misbehaving variable.

Errors & troubleshooting

Common pitfalls

• Solidity storage layout is not part of the ABI — you must know or derive the slot index for each variable, since the contract gives you no hint.
• Multiple small variables can be packed into one 32-byte slot, so extracting a single value often means masking and shifting the returned bytes.
• A mapping's values do not live at its declared base slot; each entry sits at keccak256(abi.encode(key, baseSlot)), which you must compute before calling.
