eth_getStorageAt

eth_getStorageAt reads the raw 32-byte value held at a specific storage slot of a contract on Polygon PoS (chain ID 137), the EVM-equivalent network that runs on MATIC gas. It bypasses the ABI entirely: instead of calling a getter, you name the slot index and read whatever is stored there at a chosen block — useful when a value is internal, has no public accessor, or you want to inspect a contract such as a QuickSwap pool or a bridged stablecoin without its interface. Send the request to https://polygon.therpc.io/YOUR_API_KEY and the result is the slot's 32-byte value, left-padded with zeros and hex-encoded.

Use cases

• Read the implementation address of a proxy straight from its EIP-1967 slot without needing the proxy's ABI — common across upgradeable Polygon DeFi contracts.
• Inspect DAO governance state such as proposal status or vote tallies directly from the slots that hold them.
• Verify a deployed contract's storage layout during a security audit on Polygon by comparing on-chain slot values to the expected layout.
• Debug unexpected contract behaviour by reading raw slots to see the actual stored state at a given block.

Errors & troubleshooting

Common pitfalls

• Solidity storage layout is not exposed in the ABI — you must know or derive the slot index for each variable, typically from the compiler's storage layout output.
• Several small variables can be packed into one 32-byte slot, so a single read may hold multiple values; extract each with bit-masking and shifting.
• Mapping entries are not at the declared base slot: the value for a key lives at keccak256(abi.encode(key, baseSlot)), which you must compute before querying.
